Abstract:
The last decade has seen an impressive development of digital training devices in the professional world, universities or even schools. Multimedia documents (visual and verbal presentation, hypermedia, videos) are omnipresent in this context, but their design is based more on intuitive or empirical rules than on research-proven principles. However, the field of research into multimedia learning has produced numerous design principles based on knowledge of the cognitive processes at work in the processing of multimodal information. Affective aspects, initially considered as mere subsidiary information, are now being studied as determining factors, particularly for cognitive engagement.
In this presentation, Prof. Mireille Bétrancourt will describe the hypotheses of the proponents of emotional design and their illustration in experimental research exploring the effect of the aesthetics of images in educational hypermedia on performance, attentional processes and the user experience.
